The problem with frying a nine-inch trout is that you’re frying A nine-inch trout. And, doggone it, that’s not much of a meal.
However, this one was gifted to me this morning by a neighboring camper who was on the water by 7 a.m.
This one I fried in butter with garlic powder, a little smoked paprika, salt and pepper. You see the remains of it in the photo.
Decades ago, when the family and I lived in Oregon, I was owned by a blind Schnauzer. Ernie, blind and generally terrified but sort of my dog. Ernie and I would occasionally ā too seldom ā visit a little meat shop by the river bridge and get a small bag of smoked trout before heading out for a day hike on Mt. Jefferson.
Midway, Ernie and I snacked on smoked trout. He was pretty blind but he could smell and he could taste. We both enjoyed the smoked trout.
Tonight’s trout ā selfishly, I didn’t share with Millie; it was too small ā fried out here in the big woods, took me back to Ernie, to Oregon and the big woods of the Cascades.

Poor Millie! I hope you had a fried honey bun to go with that trout!

Neat story! Take up fishing there and get you a bigger one.
I fished some in Oregon and more when I lived in Denver metro (gold medal streams) but would have to start from scratch with tackle. I am considering it, though. Guys here are catching walleye and pike even fishing from the bank.
My boss has a Norman Rockwell painting on his wall of 2 kids returning from the lake. The sharp dressed kid decked out with all the latest fishing gear carries a fish on a string and a scowl on his face. His “barefoot and overalls” fishing partner with his tin can of worms and cane pole, proudly carries a dozen fish on a string.
Need we send you a care package with a $9.88 Zebco Slingshot and a $1.27 package of Eagle Claw bait holders? We’ll put Millie to searching out the earthworms.
Your blog is making us want to go camping.
Fred… I’m considering that. š
Bill – I’ve been following your posts off and on for a couple of weeks or so. I’m a bit jealous. I told Gayle we needed to hook up our trailer and come find you. What is it from Central Texas – half a day! š
At least.
Looks like it was delicious! And Iām sure the surroundings made it even better. š
as good as Colorado trout caught in a little 2 foot across stream?
Babs: No. But pretty darned tasty.
